In his book A History of the World in 100 Objects, British Museum director (and future director of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin) Neil MacGregor curates a presentation of world history employing objects from the British Museums collection. This approach is one that fosters a tangible and concrete approach to history, one that can be very successful with young learners.

The workshop is based on a cultural studies seminar taught at the University of Bonn and will look at 14 different objects that bear (often surprising) significance for the course US history has and continues to take. Ranging from the banjo to the Gatling gun to P.T. Barnums circus tent, historical objects will be used as points of departure for understanding history in interdisciplinary and interconnected manner.

Participants are aware of the potential of cultural objects for synthesizing a variety of historical periods, topics, and perspectives.

They learned how to group objects according to various curricular categories and how to approach objects in the classroom.

They discussed and designed sample lesson plans centered on cultural objects.

  • Overview of US history as manifested and represented by US objects
  • Intersection between historical and cultural development and their encapsulation in key objects
  • Lesson plans based on the objects introduced in the seminar
